Bonds Ease After CPI; Gold Climbs as Geopolitics, Yen Intervention Risk Loom

U.S. stocks finished mixed Tuesday as government-bond yields slipped modestly following the consumer-price index, while gold rallied to its highest level in more than two months amid renewed geopolitical uncertainty.

The CPI’s impact helped push core nominal yields slightly lower, supporting a rotation into traditional safe havens. Gold rose on the session, striking its strongest price since early June as traders sought protection against policy risk and Middle East tensions.

President Donald Trump signaled a return to economic pressure on Iran after a U.S.-led military campaign failed to compel Tehran to yield, a shift that kept markets on edge over potential disruptions to energy markets and regional stability. The rhetoric reinforced a cautious tone across risk assets even as equities showed pockets of strength.

Currency markets were closely watched after the yen again approached the psychologically sensitive 160 per dollar level, reviving intervention talk. Officials in Tokyo have demonstrated a low tolerance for extended weakness in the currency; reports that the Japanese government supports a faster pace of interest-rate hikes added fuel to speculation that authorities may act to stabilize the yen and cool import-driven inflation.

Europe continued to post relative economic resilience. Poland’s economy expanded by a stronger-than-expected 3.8% in the second quarter, cementing its status alongside Spain as one of the brighter growth spots on the continent. The data underpinned a constructive tone in regional markets, where European stocks advanced about 0.6% on the day.

In Asia, Tokyo outperformed with a roughly 1% gain, while Hong Kong and mainland Chinese equities traded little changed as investors weighed domestic earnings and policy signals. U.S. futures were flat in overnight trading.

Oil prices eased, with Brent crude down about 2% to near USD 87 a barrel, as traders balanced Middle East risk premiums against demand concerns and the latest macroeconomic signals.
