Brazil regulator approves 5.67% electricity tariff hike for EDP São Paulo’s large customers

New rates take effect on October 23, with residential tariffs rising 2.17%; utility serves 2.24 million customer accounts.

By Brazil Stock Guide — Brazil’s electricity regulator Aneel has approved an annual tariff increase for EDP São Paulo, with large commercial and industrial customers facing an average 5.67% rise in regulated electricity rates, more than twice the increase for residential consumers.

The new tariffs will take effect on October 23, 2026, following a decision by Aneel’s board on Tuesday (October 13).

Residential electricity rates will rise by 2.17%, while low-voltage customers will see an average increase of 2.09%. The overall average tariff adjustment across customer categories is 3.16%.

EDP São Paulo serves approximately 2.24 million customer accounts in the state of São Paulo, Brazil’s largest economic hub.

According to Aneel, the adjustments reflect changes in electricity procurement costs, distribution and transmission expenses, sector-specific charges, and financial adjustments to be recovered over the following 12 months.

The steeper increase for high-voltage customers could add to operating costs for industrial facilities and larger commercial businesses that purchase electricity under regulated tariffs.

The impact on individual companies will depend on their electricity supply arrangements, as businesses operating in Brazil’s deregulated power market are not necessarily subject to the same regulated energy tariffs.
