By Brazil Stock Guide – Brazil’s Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira said the country could quadruple biofuel production by 2035, positioning Latin America’s largest economy as a global leader in renewable energy. Speaking at the COP 30 climate summit in Belém, Silveira highlighted Brazil’s plan to expand biofuel capacity while keeping economic growth aligned with climate goals.
The announcement comes as 19 countries pledged at COP 30 to scale up low-carbon fuel production. “It’s possible to quadruple biofuels by 2035, and 19 countries have already joined this effort,” Silveira said. “This strengthens sustainable agribusiness, accelerates the energy transition, fights global warming, and reinforces national economies.”
Silveira emphasized the symbolic importance of hosting the conference “under the canopy of the Amazon rainforest,” describing it as proof of Brazil’s environmental leadership.
Lula’s Global Role
According to Silveira, energy policy is one of the core pillars of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s administration. “President Lula has played a fundamental role as a global leader in these international forums,” he said. “I’ve accompanied him in more than a hundred bilateral meetings and seen how he governs with a focus on transforming the global energy matrix.”
The minister noted that Lula’s approach has attracted foreign investment to Brazil’s clean-energy portfolio, which includes biofuels, hydroelectric projects, and expanding solar capacity—sectors involving major Brazilian players such as Petrobras (PBR) and Raízen (RAIZ4.SA).
Economic Impact and Market Outlook
Silveira framed the biofuel expansion as both a climate necessity and a strategic economic opportunity. “Energy transition has two pillars: climate change mitigation and economic growth,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity for a nation like Brazil, blessed with fertile soil, a tropical climate, and 11% of the planet’s freshwater.”
