By Brazil Stock Guide – Brazil is preparing to publish the rules for its first battery auction, a move aimed at strengthening power-system reliability as solar, wind and biomass expand across the country’s electricity matrix.
Speaking during the Fórum Esfera event in Guarujá, São Paulo, Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira said Friday that the ordinance for the auction will be released in the coming days. The tender is expected to take place in the second half of 2026 and will contract battery energy-storage systems for the National Interconnected System, known as SIN.
Storage test
The initiative marks a strategic shift for Brazil’s power sector. Battery storage can help absorb renewable generation when supply is high and release energy when demand rises, reducing losses and giving the grid more flexibility.
“Energy storage will be central to integrating renewables, reducing losses and modernizing Brazil’s power system,” Silveira said.
Industrial policy
The government is also discussing gradual local-content mechanisms to support Brazil’s battery and storage supply chain. Silveira said the model followed a broad round of international technical discussions, noting that many storage projects abroad rely heavily on state subsidies.
The battery auction comes as Brazil debates a broader energy agenda, including critical minerals, natural gas, biofuels, fuel security and oil exploration in the Equatorial Margin. Silveira defended Brazil’s ability to combine energy sovereignty, economic development and environmental responsibility.
