By Brazil Stock Guide – Petrobras SA (PETR4.SA) has carried out a test production of sustainable aviation fuel at its Henrique Lage refinery (Revap) in São José dos Campos, São Paulo state.
The pilot run, conducted in the first week of September, mixed vegetable oil into the conventional refining process for jet fuel. The share of vegetable oil in the blend reached 1.2%, a milestone in the company’s efforts to bring cleaner alternatives to the aviation market.
Sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, can replace conventional kerosene without requiring modifications to aircraft engines or fueling infrastructure, making it an immediate option for airlines seeking to cut emissions, according to Agência iNFRA.
The move comes as Brazil prepares to enforce a mandate in 2027 requiring airlines to use SAF, under the national Future Fuel Law and the International Civil Aviation Organization’s CORSIA program, aimed at reducing and offsetting CO₂ emissions from international flights.
The Revap test underscores Petrobras’ bid to establish itself as a key supplier of lower-carbon fuels, as the aviation industry faces mounting pressure to decarbonize.
