By Brazil Stock Guide – Brazil’s state development bank BNDES has approved R$285 million in financing for Eurofarma Laboratórios SA to develop new medicines, including potential alternatives to opioid-based painkillers, as the government seeks to strengthen domestic pharmaceutical innovation.
The funding, announced Wednesday, Nov. 4, will support research, development and innovation projects at Eurofarma’s facilities in Itapevi, São Paulo, according to a statement from BNDES. The investment will also target antibiotics designed to combat resistant microorganisms and improved pharmaceutical formulations for depression and Alzheimer’s disease.
The financing comes through the BNDES Mais Inovação program, which supports technological development and industrial innovation in Brazil. The initiative aims to expand the country’s ability to develop advanced pharmaceutical products and reduce technological dependence in strategic healthcare segments.
Focus on Pain Treatments and Drug Innovation
A central component of the investment is the development of innovative pain treatments that could potentially replace opioid-based medications.
The research program also includes work on a new antibiotic intended to fight drug-resistant microorganisms, an area of growing importance for pharmaceutical development.
Beyond these projects, Eurofarma will pursue incremental pharmaceutical innovations involving new combinations of existing medicines for depression and Alzheimer’s disease.
These formulations are intended to improve patients’ adherence to treatment, potentially making existing therapeutic approaches easier to follow.
The financing covers both the development of new pharmaceutical products and improvements to treatments already available in the market.
Clinical Trials and Research Infrastructure
Part of the R$285 million package will finance clinical trials, alongside the acquisition of seven imported pieces of equipment that have no domestically manufactured equivalents.
The equipment will be installed at Eurofarma’s research and development center in Itapevi, supporting experimental activities that require high levels of precision and control.
The investment is designed to expand the company’s technological capabilities across different stages of pharmaceutical development, from experimental research to clinical testing.
BNDES Healthcare Financing Reaches R$11.7 Billion
The financing forms part of a broader government effort to expand Brazil’s pharmaceutical research and manufacturing capabilities.
BNDES President Aloizio Mercadante said strengthening domestic drug development is a priority of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s administration.
“President Lula’s government considers it essential to strengthen the national pharmaceutical industry so that it can develop innovative medicines and improve the administration of existing ones, contributing to better treatment,” Mercadante said.
According to the development bank, it has approved R$11.7 billion in healthcare financing since 2023, supporting the development of 672 new medicines, vaccines, active pharmaceutical ingredients and medical devices.
Mercadante said the goal is to increase the domestic industry’s ability to meet the healthcare needs of Brazil’s population.
Eurofarma Expands Pharmaceutical Research
Founded in 1972, Eurofarma is one of Brazil’s major pharmaceutical manufacturers and has an established presence across Latin America.
The Brazilian-owned company operates in research, manufacturing and pharmaceutical distribution, with a portfolio covering prescription medicines, generics, over-the-counter products and hospital treatments.
Its business serves multiple medical specialties through retail pharmacies, institutional customers and export markets.
The newly approved financing will support Eurofarma’s research operations in Itapevi, reinforcing its investment in pharmaceutical innovation and the development of treatments targeting significant medical needs.
