B3 Suspends Trading for Carnival, Reopens with Shortened Session on Wednesday

Markets close Feb. 16–17 for Carnival, with shortened trading hours on Ash Wednesday before a return to normal sessions.

Ibovespa 3.24% rise

By Brazil Stock Guide – B3, Brazil’s main stock exchange, will suspend trading across most markets during the Carnival holiday, with activities resuming on a shortened schedule on Ash Wednesday.

On Monday and Tuesday, February 16 and 17, there will be no trading in variable income markets. The suspension covers equities, real estate investment funds (FIIs), exchange-traded funds (ETFs), Brazilian depositary receipts (BDRs), derivatives, private fixed-income securities and fixed-income ETFs, among other instruments.

The halt reflects Brazil’s Carnival holiday, a nationwide four-day period during which public offices, banks and financial markets typically remain closed or operate at reduced capacity. The break is a recurring feature of the local financial calendar and is factored into liquidity planning by domestic and foreign investors.

Shortened Session on Ash Wednesday

Trading resumes on Wednesday, February 18, known locally as Ash Wednesday, which marks the end of Carnival and the partial resumption of business activity across the country. On this day, the exchange operates with a shortened trading session.

Variable income markets will be open from 1:00 p.m. to 5:55 p.m., following a pre-opening period from 12:45 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. The closing call for all assets will run from 5:55 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

For financial and commodity derivatives, trading will also begin at 1:00 p.m., preceded by a pre-opening session from 12:55 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. The organized over-the-counter (OTC) market will hold pre-opening from 12:45 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., with trading from 1:00 p.m. to 5:55 p.m. and a closing call between 5:55 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
