Ambipar, SBM Offshore Unveil Robot to Clean Oil Tanks, Boost Offshore Safety

New remote-operated system replaces human entry in confined spaces, reducing risks and environmental impact in oil production

By Brasil Stock Guide – Ambipar Participações e Empreendimentos S.A. (B3: AMBP3), a global leader in environmental solutions, and SBM Offshore N.V., a world reference in ocean infrastructure, announced Monday the launch of a remotely operated robot designed to clean oil tanks in floating production, storage and offloading units (FPSOs). The companies disclosed the initiative in an official statement, highlighting its potential to set a new standard in safety, efficiency and sustainability for the offshore industry.

The technology eliminates the need for workers to enter confined spaces during tank-cleaning operations — traditionally one of the most hazardous phases in offshore production due to high temperatures, chemical residues and operational risks. Instead, the process is carried out entirely by a robot, remotely controlled from a safe location.

The system has already been successfully tested on an operating FPSO, where the robot removed heavy oily residues while onboard crews monitored the procedure 24/7 from outside the tank. “This robotic solution marks a turning point for the offshore industry. By automating a traditionally dangerous process, we are not only increasing safety but also improving operational efficiency and reducing environmental impact. It is a clear demonstration of how innovation and responsibility can work hand in hand,” said Rogério Calderaro, Ambipar’s Global Head of Industrial Services.

Beyond protecting lives, the system reduces costs and downtime, aligning with the companies’ commitments to technological innovation and sustainable practices. “We are excited to announce this agreement with Ambipar. Together, we are at the forefront of a revolutionary approach to deliver innovative solutions that eliminate risks to human life during complex tasks such as cleaning oil tanks on FPSOs,” said Jaap-Harm Westhuis, SBM Offshore’s Director of Technology, Innovation and Product Development.

Ambipar operates in more than 40 countries with over 600 operational bases, focusing on decarbonization, circular economy, energy transition and environmental regeneration projects. The company holds more than 25 registered patents, offers over 100 circular economy solutions, and its shares are listed on both B3 and the New York Stock Exchange, classified as “green stocks” by Standard & Poor’s.
