By Brazil Stock Guide – Petrobras (B3: PETR4, PETR3; NYSE: PBR) reached a new production milestone in Brazil’s pre-salt region as the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré, operating in the Búzios field of the Santos Basin, hit an instantaneous record of 270,000 barrels per day (bpd) on October 25.
Average output in October has exceeded 250,000 bpd — well above the unit’s nominal capacity of 225,000 bpd — reflecting the company’s push for greater efficiency and productivity in its flagship offshore assets.
The vessel, chartered from SBM Offshore, was designed with operational margins allowing peaks of up to 270,000 bpd without modifications. Petrobras said all optimization measures follow strict safety protocols and prior approvals from regulators.
The Almirante Tamandaré is part of the Búzios 7 project, the sixth system deployed in the field, which is expected to help lift Búzios’ total output to 1 million bpd by the end of 2025, potentially making it Petrobras’ largest producing field.
The company’s production ramp-up comes as Brazil consolidates its role among the world’s top oil producers, even as global energy companies face pressure to balance output growth with decarbonization goals. Búzios, discovered in 2010, is the cornerstone of Petrobras’ pre-salt strategy and a major contributor to national revenue, with production gains supported by cutting-edge subsea infrastructure and high-productivity wells.
