By Brazil Stock Guide – Shell has been authorized to operate as a Brazilian Shipping Company (EBN), becoming the first international oil and gas group to obtain the license and internalize part of its maritime logistics operations in the country.
With the approval, the company has begun operating the shuttle tanker DP Ametista Brasil, a vessel registered in Brazil and crewed entirely by Brazilian seafarers. The ship will be used for oil transportation via coastal shipping, supporting Shell’s pre-salt operations in the Santos Basin.
The operation currently employs 48 Brazilian maritime professionals, following a structured training program. The vessel was built in South Korea for Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers and had been part of Shell’s chartered fleet for around eight years before being incorporated into the company’s owned fleet — a requirement for obtaining the EBN license.
According to Shell Brazil, the move improves operational and financial efficiency, reduces recurring logistical displacements and contributes to lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions associated with maritime operations.
