By Brazil Stock Guide – Brazil’s telecom regulator intensified inspections during the Black Friday shopping period, increasing scrutiny on large online retailers including Mercado Livre (MELI), Shopee and Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN). Authorities flagged thousands of telecom products that lacked mandatory certification.
Inspectors visited distribution centers in Paraná, São Paulo and the Federal District between Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, reviewing 20,591 items and identifying 4,226 irregular products. The list included chargers, wireless cameras, networking equipment, transceivers, power banks, TV boxes and smartwatches. According to operational data, 2,569 of the irregular items were found in facilities operated by Mercado Livre, followed by 1,325 at Shopee and 332 at Amazon.
Mercado Livre said the roughly 2,500 products retained at its center represented 2.03% of inventory in categories covered by Anatel rules and 0.28% of the site’s overall stock at the inspected facility. The company said it shared seller information with authorities and is awaiting the final technical report from the inspection.
The platform noted it was classified as a “compliant company” by the regulator in 2024, with a 90% reliability index. Mercado Livre also highlighted internal initiatives aimed at preventing the circulation of illicit goods, including its Brand Protection Program, the MACA anti-piracy alliance and measures recognized by national anti-piracy institutions.
Regulators said the number of irregular products fell sharply compared with previous years, attributing the decline to automated surveillance tools.
