By Brazil Stock Guide – Transpetro, a subsidiary of Petrobras, is moving forward with a tender for the construction of eight LNG carriers, with participation from “two or three” Brazilian shipyards, according to the company’s president, Sérgio Bacci. The opening of bids is scheduled for September 22, marking a crucial step in Petrobras’ plan to increase its fleet while prioritizing the national shipbuilding industry.

The tender is part of a broader strategy to expand Transpetro’s fleet, with new projects that include up to four Panamax tankers and four medium-sized vessels for cabotage. The goal is to ensure that the construction of these ships will be entirely carried out in Brazil, strengthening the local industry. “The aim is to nearly double Transpetro’s fleet, increasing from 34 to 63 vessels,” Bacci said, according to Agência iNFRA.

“Naval industry anywhere in the world only works with the state’s involvement,” said Bacci during the Rio Pipeline event. “In Brazil, we need a demand of at least 20 years to make the naval industry viable in the long term,” he added, advocating for subsidies to ensure the sector’s competitiveness.
