Eneva Opens Ceará’s Free Gas Market With Landmark Cerbras Contract

First on-grid supply deal for an industrial consumer marks a concrete step in gas market liberalization.

Eneva, energy

By Brazil Stock Guide – Eneva (ENEV3), Brazil’s largest private natural gas operator, has signed the first on-grid natural gas supply contract in the state of Ceará, effectively launching the local free gas market. The agreement serves Grupo Cerbras, the state’s largest gas consumer and the first industrial user to migrate to the liberalized environment. The contract covers the sale of 10.95 million cubic meters of natural gas, with deliveries starting in January 2026.

The deal represents a turning point for gas market reform in Northeast Brazil, translating regulatory opening into an executed commercial transaction with direct implications for energy costs and supply predictability. For Eneva, the agreement advances the diversification of its customer base and reinforces its strategy of expanding gas commercialization beyond traditional power generation.

Cerbras effect
Based in Maracanaú, Ceará, Cerbras has more than three decades of experience in ceramic tiles and porcelain surfaces. The company is a market leader in the North and Northeast and ranks among the largest players nationwide. Management says migration to the free gas market enhances industrial competitiveness by improving cost visibility, energy planning and long-term operational efficiency, while supporting sustainability commitments recognized by the ESG-FIEC seal.

Industrial signal
Beyond the bilateral impact, the move carries broader implications for Ceará’s industrial landscape. The entry of large energy-intensive manufacturers into the free gas market tends to improve the state’s investment appeal, signaling a more competitive and flexible energy framework aligned with the needs of modern manufacturing supply chains.

Sergipe Hub at the core
Gas supply will come from Eneva’s portfolio via the Hub Sergipe, the first privately owned LNG terminal connected to Brazil’s national gas transportation grid. Located in Barra dos Coqueiros, in the metropolitan area of Aracaju, the complex includes a 1.6-GW power plant and a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) with regasification capacity of 21 million cubic meters per day, providing flexibility and supply reliability — key competitive advantages for emerging free-market contracts.

By enabling the migration of Ceará’s first industrial free-market gas consumer, Eneva strengthens its strategic position in Brazil’s evolving gas sector, combining infrastructure, LNG access and commercial execution at a moment when regional gas markets are only beginning to open.
