Pre-salt Output Hits Record High as Brazil Reaches 5.1 Million Barrels a Day

Brazil’s offshore dominance deepens as pre-salt fields deliver 81% of total output and Petrobras cements its overwhelming lead, producing nine out of every ten barrels extracted in the country.

By Brazil Stock Guide – Brazil’s total oil and natural gas production reached 5.114 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) in September 2025, according to the latest monthly bulletin from the National Petroleum Agency (ANP). While slightly below July’s record of 5.160 million boe/d, the figure underscores the strength of the country’s energy sector and marks a new all-time high for the pre-salt layer, which produced 4.143 million boe/d — the largest volume ever recorded.

The pre-salt accounted for 81.1% of national production, supported by 169 active wells in the Santos and Campos basins. Oil output from this layer totaled 3.209 million barrels per day, while natural gas reached 148.37 million cubic meters per day, representing annual increases of 12.7% and 12.1%, respectively. The results reinforce the strategic role of Brazil’s offshore reservoirs, which now dominate the country’s hydrocarbons mix.

The Tupi field, located in the Santos Basin, remained the nation’s largest individual producer, with 818,000 barrels per day of oil and 40.5 million m³/d of gas. It was followed by Búzios (772,000 bbl/d) and Mero (607,000 bbl/d) — three giant fields that together account for nearly half of Brazil’s pre-salt output, cementing Rio de Janeiro’s coastline as the backbone of the country’s energy system.

Among offshore installations, the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré, operating in the Búzios and Tambuatá fields, led oil production with 222,000 bbl/d, while the FPSO Guanabara at Mero topped gas production with 12.1 million m³/d. These floating platforms symbolize the technological leap that has propelled Brazil’s deepwater expansion.

The Petrobras dominance remains undisputed. The state-controlled company, alone or in consortium, accounted for 91.3% of Brazil’s total oil and gas output. In September, Petrobras pumped 3.58 million barrels of oil per day and 172.8 million m³/d of gas, consolidating its central position in pre-salt operations.

With combined output above 110,000 boe/d, Brava Energia — created in August 2025 from the merger of Enauta and 3R Petroleum — became Brazil’s second-largest oil and gas producer, uniting offshore fields like Atlanta and Manati with mature onshore assets in Potiguar and Macau.

Private operators continue to expand their footprint. PetroRio Jaguar (PRIO) produced 66,900 boe/d, followed by TotalEnergies (49,000 boe/d) and Shell Brasil (32,600 boe/d). Others players continue to diversify the landscape, while mid-size independents such as Trident Energy, PetroRecôncavo, Karoon Brasil, and Perenco maintain important roles in onshore and brownfield operations.

Total oil production rose 0.5% from August and 12.7% year over year, reaching 3.915 million bbl/d. The average API gravity of Brazilian oil stood at 28.5°, with 24.8% light, 73.7% medium, and 1.5% heavy crude, indicating overall strong quality of national output.

Natural gas utilization remained near record highs at 97.9%. The market received 66.24 million m³/d, while gas flaring dropped 16.1% from August, totaling 4.1 million m³/d — a sign of greater operational efficiency and environmental discipline.

By state, Rio de Janeiro accounted for 87% of Brazil’s oil and 76% of its natural gas production, followed by São Paulo and Espírito Santo. Together, the Santos and Campos basins made up nearly 98% of offshore output, reaffirming the Southeast as the country’s exploration and production hub.

According to the ANP, monthly fluctuations reflect operational dynamics — planned maintenance, commissioning, and well cleanups — typical of large-scale offshore production. With several new pre-salt units coming online by year-end, Brazil is on track to close 2025 near 5.2 million boe/d, solidifying its position among the world’s top 10 oil and gas producers.
