By Brazil Stock Guide – Brazil’s National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and the Ministry of Cities have completed the National Urban Mobility Study, which maps out 187 transport infrastructure projects worth an estimated 430 billion reais ($85 billion) through 2054. The plan aims to expand public transit capacity in 21 of Brazil’s largest metropolitan regions.
According to data published by Agência iNFRA, the study allocates 230 billion reais for metro expansion, 105 billion reais for light rail (VLT) systems, 80 billion reais for bus rapid transit (BRT) networks, 31 billion reais for suburban train services, and 3.4 billion reais for bus corridors.
BNDES said project execution will depend on financing models involving private partnerships and concessions. The study estimates that full implementation could prevent 8,000 road deaths annually and cut 3.1 million tons of CO₂ emissions per year, while significantly reducing travel time and urban congestion.
