BNDES Approves $90 Million for Marcopolo Exports

Brazilian lender backs bus maker’s global expansion and production capacity

BNDES Marcopolo financing

By Brazil Stock Guide – Brazil’s development bank BNDES approved financing of up to 482 million reais ($90 million) for Marcopolo SA to support the production of buses and bodywork for export markets, according to an official statement.

The funding, provided through the BNDES Exim Pre-Shipment line, is designed to help the Brazilian manufacturer expand its international footprint and improve productivity, the bank said.

Marcopolo SA, one of Latin America’s largest bus manufacturers, exports to more than 140 countries, including Chile, Argentina and Peru. The company employs more than 11,500 workers across its Brazilian operations.

The financing aligns with Brazil’s Nova Indústria Brasil industrial policy, which aims to increase competitiveness, innovation and sustainability across key sectors while boosting exports.

“Strengthening Brazilian exports is part of the government’s strategy to ensure the competitiveness of domestic industry abroad, modernizing the economy, promoting foreign currency inflows and generating jobs and income in Brazil,” BNDES President Aloizio Mercadante said in the statement.

As with other export support operations, disbursements are made domestically in local currency to Brazilian companies, reinforcing local production chains.

Marcopolo has maintained a long-standing relationship with BNDES, securing nearly 250 financing operations over more than three decades, totaling about 5 billion reais. In the past two years alone, seven pre-shipment export financing deals were approved, amounting to roughly 940 million reais.

In addition, the bank has supported post-shipment export operations for Marcopolo’s vehicles and components, totaling approximately 114 million reais.

The company operates 11 manufacturing plants globally, including three in Brazil and eight abroad, and remains one of the world’s largest producers of bus bodywork.
