By Brazil Stock Guide – Brazil’s cargo transport industry rose nearly 40% above pre-pandemic levels in August, driven by agriculture and higher demand for fertilizers and crop shipments, according to the country’s statistics agency IBGE. The sector expanded 0.6% from July, marking its fourth consecutive monthly gain and a 2.4% cumulative increase.
The results, reported by Valor Econômico citing the IBGE’s Monthly Services Survey, highlight how agribusiness has been boosting logistics activity across Brazil this year. “The performance reflects both the increase in the transport of agricultural inputs, such as fertilizers, and the outflow of production,” said Rodrigo Lobo, IBGE survey manager.
Cargo activity now stands 38.7% higher than in February 2020, the month before the pandemic hit. Still, it remains 4% below the record level of July 2023, which marked the peak of the historical series.
Passenger transport also gained 0.3% in August compared with July, after falling 2.2% the previous month. The segment is now 9.9% above pre-pandemic levels but remains 15.6% below the February 2014 record.
