Treasury Buybacks Ease Long-End Pain as Dollar Slides on $40 Trillion Debt Milestone

On the day the U.S. national debt officially topped USD 40 trillion, the Treasury stepped up efforts to calm the bond market by expanding buybacks of longer-dated securities, a move that helped pull the 30-year Treasury yield back from its highest levels since 2007.

Officials said the operation provided immediate relief in the long end of the curve, which had been under pressure amid heavy supply and sticky inflation expectations. The buyback program’s success was reflected in a modest retracement in the 30-year yield, though market participants cautioned that any sustained easing would hinge on the Treasury’s broader issuance plans and the Federal Reserve’s policy path.

Currency and commodity markets reacted swiftly. The dollar weakened against major peers as investors pared back positions, and gold rallied roughly 3% to about USD 4,545 an ounce, drawing demand from investors seeking a hedge against further currency depreciation. Most Wall Street strategists surveyed by Bloomberg expect continued pressure on the greenback in the near term.

Geopolitics and policy added to the market’s cautious tone. As former President Donald Trump escalates economic pressure on Iran, China’s foreign ministry warned that such tactics are unlikely to succeed and urged restraint and cooler heads in diplomatic dealings, underscoring the risk that tensions could spill over into markets.

In China, turmoil in the property sector took a dramatic turn: the founder of embattled developer Evergrande was sentenced to life in prison on charges described by state prosecutors as heinous.

Corporate headlines highlighted the strain of a costly pivot to technology. Alibaba Group reported a precipitous 75% drop in profits as the e-commerce giant ramps up investments in artificial intelligence and other strategic priorities, weighing on investor sentiment for one of Asia’s largest listed companies.

Meanwhile, sources told Bloomberg that Asian private equity firm Boyu Capital, UBS Asset Management, Tencent Holdings and General Atlantic are among parties being considered as anchor investors for Shein’s planned IPO, a sign that demand for marquee consumer listings in the region remains robust despite broader market volatility.

Market action was mixed across Asia and Europe. European and mainland Chinese equities traded largely flat, while Japanese and Hong Kong markets posted modest recoveries of about 1% as buying interest returned to beaten-down cyclical names. U.S. futures pointed to a muted open. Oil prices continued to edge higher on geopolitical concerns, with Brent crude up roughly 2% near USD 94 a barrel amid persistent tensions in the Middle East.

Analysts said the Treasury’s buyback provided a temporary safety valve for long-term yields, but the combination of record debt levels, heavy issuance, central-bank policy uncertainty and geopolitical risks leaves markets vulnerable to renewed volatility.
