By Brazil Stock Guide – Brazil’s independent oil and gas producers ended 2025 with a sharp increase in output, reinforcing the sector’s growing role in the country’s energy supply as production expanded both offshore and on land.
Members of the Brazilian Association of Independent Oil and Gas Producers, known as Abpip, produced an average 364,300 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025, up 22.8% from the previous year, the group said on Thursday (5).
Total oil output in Brazil reached 4.9 million barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025, a 12.7% increase compared with 2024, according to Abpip’s figures.
Independent producers delivered an average of 273,000 barrels of oil per day from January through December, marking a 25% gain year-on-year. Natural gas production rose 16.6% to 14.5 million cubic meters per day over the same period.
Abpip said the stronger performance was largely driven by a surge in activity in Rio de Janeiro state, while also reflecting gains in other producing regions, including Maranhão, Espírito Santo, Bahia, Sergipe and Alagoas. Output in Amazonas was broadly flat.
December production climbed to 384,900 barrels of oil equivalent per day, up 48.1% from a year earlier. The month’s level was 5.7% above the 2025 average, signaling a higher exit rate heading into 2026 if current output is sustained.
“The 2025 result confirms the maturity and resilience of independent production in Brazil,” Abpip President Marcio Felix said in a statement. “Even in a more challenging economic environment, Abpip’s members consistently expanded the national supply of oil and gas, strengthened the production base for 2026 and maintained a relevant contribution to job and income generation in producing states.”
Rio de Janeiro accounted for about 73% of total growth over the year, adding roughly 49,400 barrels of oil equivalent per day to the annual average. Abpip said the December increase was also heavily concentrated in the state, reflecting ramp-ups throughout the second half.
The association highlighted that growth was broad-based, with production rising both offshore and onshore. Onshore output increased 9.9% in 2025, adding more than 12,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day and representing 18% of the sector’s total production increase.
In December, gas output growth was more moderate due to operational and regional factors, while crude oil drove most of the month’s expansion, Abpip said. The group added that maintaining momentum into 2026 will depend on regulatory stability, economic predictability and competitive conditions for investment.
