Eletrobras rebrands as AXIA Energia, ending a legacy that began in 1962

Brazil’s power giant adopts a new identity after selling Eletronuclear, marking a new era of clean energy and financial discipline.

By Brazil Stock Guide – Brazilian power utility Centrais Elétricas Brasileiras S.A. (B3: ELET3; NYSE: EBR) unveiled its new corporate identity as AXIA Energia on Wednesday (Oct. 22), marking a decisive step in its post-privatization transformation. The move comes a week after the company sold Eletronuclear to Âmbar Energia, part of J&F Investimentos, in a deal worth about R$ 4.5 billion (US$ 780 million), ending its direct involvement in nuclear generation.

Founded in 1962, Eletrobras grew into Latin America’s largest power company, with assets spanning hydroelectric, transmission, and distribution networks across Brazil. The new name, derived from the Greek axía (“value”), reflects its ambition to build a future anchored in financial discipline, operational excellence, and long-term value creation.

From Nov. 10, 2025, the company’s shares will trade under new tickers: AXIA3, AXIA5, AXIA6 on Brazil’s B3, and AXIA, AXIA PR on the NYSE, replacing the legacy ELET and EBR codes. The investor relations website will migrate to ri.axia.com.br on Oct. 24.

Eduardo Haiama, Chief Financial and Investor Relations Officer, said the rebranding marks a new phase of maturity. “AXIA is born from a solid legacy, yet firmly focused on the future of energy — one built on discipline, excellence, and value creation,” he said.

The sale of Eletronuclear concludes a transformation that began with Eletrobras’s privatization in 2022, which left the Brazilian government with only a minority golden-share stake. Analysts say the move simplifies its balance sheet, reduces regulatory complexity, and enhances comparability with international peers such as NextEra Energy and Iberdrola.

A giant that powers one-fifth of Brazil

Eletrobras, now AXIA, has an installed capacity of 44.4 gigawatts (GW) — more than one-fifth of Brazil’s total generation capacity. It operates 82 power plants across 20 states and the Federal District, including 47 hydroelectric plants such as Belo Monte and Jirau in Rondônia, and the Paulo Afonso complex in Bahia. The company also runs 33 wind farms and one solar plant, strengthening its renewable footprint.

Today, the company has four subsidiariesEletrobras CGT Eletrosul, Chesf, Eletronorte, and Eletropar — and remains a cornerstone of Brazil’s modern energy system. Created in 1962 under President João Goulart, it became a pillar of the so-called “Brazilian miracle” period, between the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the country’s GDP expanded at over 10% a year driven by heavy infrastructure investment.

The company now positions itself as a regional leader in clean energy and transmission, seeking to leverage Brazil’s renewable potential while pursuing global capital market relevance. The rebrand closes the 63-year Eletrobras era — and opens the AXIA age.
