By Brazil Stock Guide – China will resume imports of poultry from Rio Grande do Sul, a state in southern Brazil, after lifting restrictions imposed following an outbreak of Newcastle disease, reopening the country’s main export market for producers in the region. China’s General Administration of Customs said it had suspended the measures “based on the results of a risk assessment,” effective from the date of the announcement issued on Jan. 16 in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
The reopening was also formally communicated to the Brazilian government and confirmed by Luís Rua, secretary for Trade and International Relations at Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture, according to Agência Estado. The ban had been in place since July 2024, after a Newcastle case was detected at a poultry facility in Anta Gorda, in southern Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul, halting shipments from the state for a year and a half.
With the decision, poultry produced in Rio Grande do Sul from Jan. 16 onward is once again eligible for export to China. Eight slaughterhouses regain access, including units operated by Cooperativa Central Aurora Alimentos, BRF, JBS, Cooperativa Languiru, Companhia Minuano de Alimentos and Agrosul Agroavícola Industrial.
China is the main destination for poultry produced in Rio Grande do Sul, underscoring the commercial importance of the decision for Brazil’s southern poultry industry. Exporters had expected the embargo to be lifted alongside broader restrictions applied to Brazilian poultry during avian influenza-related reviews, but the clearance for the state came as a separate move.
