By Brazil Stock Guide – Brazil’s National Development Bank (BNDES) approved 60.5 million reais ($11 million) in financing for Coamo Agroindustrial Cooperativa to expand grain storage and logistics infrastructure at two sites in Paraná state.
The projects will add 52,700 metric tons of storage capacity through the construction of seven silos in Campo Mourão and São João do Ivaí.
Coamo, which is not publicly traded, will also contribute its own capital to the investments. The financing was approved through two government-backed agricultural programs funded by Brazil’s annual Plano Safra farm-credit plan.
“With an investment of 64.2 million reais, the project provides for the expansion of Coamo’s storage infrastructure, with investments in silos, grain drying and transportation systems at units located in Paraná, directly serving more than 32,000 cooperative members,” BNDES President Aloizio Mercadante said.
Campo Mourão Silos to Supply Ethanol Plant
Coamo will build five silos with combined capacity of 32,700 metric tons at its industrial complex in Campo Mourão, equivalent to about 545,000 60-kilogram bags of corn.
The structures are designed to accommodate growing deliveries from farmers and secure feedstock for the cooperative’s corn ethanol plant.
The Campo Mourão project requires total investment of 41 million reais, including 32.8 million reais for new Brazilian-made machinery and equipment and 8.2 million reais for civil works.
The plant will be able to process 1,700 metric tons of corn per day and produce 765,000 liters of ethanol. It is also expected to manufacture 510 metric tons of distillers dried grains with solubles, or DDGS, for animal feed and 34 metric tons of corn oil for biodiesel production each day.
The investment will allow Coamo to process a larger share of its members’ corn production rather than selling the grain primarily as an unprocessed commodity.
Rio Ivaí Capacity to Increase 50%
Coamo will invest another 23.2 million reais in its Rio Ivaí facility in São João do Ivaí, where it plans to build two silos with capacity of 10,000 metric tons each.
The project will increase the unit’s static storage capacity to 60,000 metric tons from 40,000 metric tons. Measured in 60-kilogram bags, capacity will rise to about 997,000 from 663,000.
The expansion also includes a new grain dryer, replacement of conveyor belts and installation of equipment to improve product flow through the silo tunnels.
The additional capacity is intended to reduce bottlenecks during harvest periods, protect grain quality and allow farmers to delay sales while awaiting better market conditions.
“We recognize and appreciate BNDES’s support for the construction of two projects that, together, are expected to generate 239 direct jobs after implementation and contribute to Paraná’s corn production chain and to the country’s food and energy security through the production of renewable ethanol and co-products for animal nutrition and the biofuels industry,” Coamo Chief Executive Officer Airton Galinari said.
Founded in 1970, Coamo operates 125 service and grain-receiving units across Paraná, Santa Catarina and Mato Grosso do Sul. The cooperative has more than 32,000 members and employs about 11,000 people.
Coamo reported revenue of more than 28 billion reais in 2025 and accounts for about 3.5% of Brazil’s grain production.
