By Brazil Stock Guide – Brazil’s electricity regulator Aneel said Tuesday it is dispatching inspectors to Paraná to investigate the cause of a massive blackout that left all 26 states and the Federal District without power overnight. The statement was released after a preliminary report from the national grid operator ONS.
According to ONS, the outage began at 12:32 a.m. local time when a fire hit a reactor at the Bateias substation in Campo Largo, Paraná, operated by Eletrobras (ELET3.SA). The incident triggered a cascading failure across the national interconnected grid, according to Folha de S.Paulo. Aneel said in a note that “inspectors will be on-site today to examine the substation and investigate the causes of the interruption,” adding that regulatory proceedings will also be launched to determine accountability.
The regulator noted that power was restored to most regions within 90 minutes, with the entire system back online after about 150 minutes. Aneel has requested technical reports from the companies involved.
Initial assessments indicate the fire likely originated from an equipment failure, though the exact cause remains under investigation. Officials dismissed sabotage as a possibility, describing the event as a localized technical fault that escalated due to safety mechanisms failing to contain it.
Industry specialists said the inquiry will resemble an aviation accident investigation, with damaged equipment disassembled and analyzed piece by piece to determine why the failure cascaded into a nationwide outage. The outcome may redefine protection standards for Brazil’s grid infrastructure.
Brazil’s Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira, also on Tuesday, added that the country “is in conditions of energy security” and ruled out reintroducing daylight saving time this year. “This is not about a lack of energy, it’s about infrastructure that transmits energy. Today we have plenty of energy,” he told state channel CanalGov. Silveira confirmed the fire in the Paraná substation was behind the failure and said power was fully restored nationwide within two hours. He also promised an internal government meeting on the matter later Tuesday.
