By Brazil Stock Guide – Brazil’s electricity regulator Aneel approved on Tuesday (19) the 2026 annual tariff adjustment for the former Amazonas Energia, setting an average increase of 6.58% for power consumers in Amazonas state.
The approved rate is sharply lower than the initial estimate of 23.15%, according to Broadcast. The reduction came after Aneel included a tariff offset tied to resources from the renegotiation of payments due under the Uso de Bem Público, or UBP, mechanism.
The new tariffs will take effect on May 26. High-voltage consumers, including industrial users and large companies, will face an average increase of 13.24%. Low-voltage consumers, a group that includes households, rural customers, small businesses and small industrial users, will see an average increase of 3.79%.
Low-voltage users account for 99.7% of all customers served by the public electricity distribution service in Amazonas. The distributor, based in Manaus, serves about 1.06 million consumer units.
According to Aneel’s 2026 technical note, electricity consumption in the concession area generates annual revenue of about 4.39 billion reais. Sector charges and the cost of purchasing electricity were the main sources of upward pressure on tariffs.
Financial components would also have added significant pressure to the adjustment, but their impact was partly offset by the UBP-related resources considered by the regulator.
Control of the Amazonas power distributor was transferred after approval by the relevant authorities and the transaction was completed in April. Âmbar Energia Amazonas took over the concessionaire. At the time, the company said the new management’s priority would be to improve service quality and restore the company’s financial balance.
Aneel is also making a preliminary calculation of a final tariff impact of 4.51% for low-voltage consumers served by power distributors in Brazil’s North and Northeast this year, after the application of resources from the UBP renegotiation.
The expected amount, above 5.53 billion reais, will be used to reduce tariffs. The 4.51% level, still subject to review, will operate as a cap for annual tariff increases by concessionaires in those regions.
For the former Amazonas Energia, the low-voltage increase came in at 3.79%, below Aneel’s preliminary cap. Before the tariff reduction, when the initial estimate pointed to a 23.15% increase, Âmbar Energia Amazonas had already requested an advance of 735 million reais in resources linked to the UBP renegotiation.
