Airbus Recall Leaves Brazilian Airlines Unaffected

Latam and Azul report normal operations despite global grounding linked to A320 software flaw

LATAM Brazil tax reform impact

By Brazil Stock Guide – A global recall affecting thousands of Airbus A320-family jets has raised operational concerns across international markets, but major Brazilian carriers say their fleets remain fully operational. The European planemaker announced the mandatory software update after determining that intense solar radiation can corrupt data used by critical flight-control systems, prompting regulators to order airlines to complete the fix before carrying passengers again.

The directive followed an incident involving a JetBlue (JBLU) flight that made an emergency landing after a sudden loss of altitude, intensifying scrutiny over the aircraft’s control-surface software. Airbus said the correction may lead to short disruptions as airlines ground affected jets, though a temporary reversion to an earlier software build is permitted.

Latam Airlines Group (LTM.US) said none of the aircraft operating in Brazil are included in the recall. The company noted that only a limited number of jets in its Colombian, Chilean and Peruvian affiliates require the update. “Affiliates of the Latam group, aligned with the measures communicated by Airbus and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, are actively implementing the required actions in parts of their A320-family fleets,” the carrier said, adding that passengers with itinerary changes will be contacted directly.

Azul (AZUL4.SA), another major A320 operator in Brazil, said its fleet is unaffected. “None of our aircraft of the model in question is included in the recall program announced by Airbus,” the airline told Terra, adding that operations remain normal.

Outside Brazil, the impact is more severe. Avianca said more than 70% of its A320 fleet must remain grounded upon arrival at maintenance bases until the update is completed. The airline halted ticket sales through December 8 to limit disruptions and facilitate rebooking. It said affected customers will be notified with available travel options.

Airbus said the recall aims to safeguard the reliability of systems that manage the aircraft’s elevators and ailerons—components essential for pitch and roll control—and acknowledged that the requirement will cause operational interruptions for airlines worldwide.
