U.S. and Israeli forces have launched a series of strikes against Iran, triggering immediate retaliation from Tehran that targeted Israeli interests and American assets across the region, including Dubai and Bahrain. The attacks resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, dramatically escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The sudden eruption of hostilities sent shockwaves through the region, leading to widespread flight cancellations and stranding over 20,000 passengers in Dubai. The Pentagon had previously informed the U.S. Congress that there were no intelligence indications of an imminent Iranian attack against the United States, raising questions about the timing and rationale for the preemptive strikes.

Iran’s government swiftly declared it would not negotiate with the U.S. following the assaults. Oman, which had mediated prior negotiations, suggested the diplomatic process had been used as a cover, noting that Iran had reportedly agreed to a zero stockpile of enriched uranium.

Global markets reacted sharply to the crisis. Gold surged 4% to $5,430 an ounce, the U.S. dollar strengthened against major peers, and crude oil prices jumped 9% amid fears of supply disruption. Asian and European equities, alongside U.S. futures, plummeted about 1.5%. European natural gas prices saw a dramatic spike, climbing as much as 25%.

Domestically, the intervention has met with significant public and political skepticism. Contrary to previous military actions, the attack garnered support from only 27% of Americans and drew strong opposition from key figures within the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) base, highlighting a rare division within traditional hawkish alignments.
