By Brazil Stock Guide — The banker Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Banco Master and arrested while attempting to fly to Dubai, had been quietly assembling a stealth media network to protect his political and economic interests, according to Brasil247.
Vorcaro used two close associates — Flávio Carneiro and Antônio Freixo (“Mineiro”) — to invest in or gain influence over several major Brazilian media outlets, including Brazil Journal, IstoÉ online, PlatôBR, and the celebrity platform run by Léo Dias. He also sought control of Correio Braziliense and Estado de Minas through the use of precatórios to offset tax liabilities.
In 2019, Flávio Carneiro was cited in an alleged R$40 million diversion scheme at Cemig, following plea-bargain statements by an executive at Casa dos Ventos Energias Renováveis, the former legal director of Renova Energia, and a financial operator. At the time, Carneiro denied any wrongdoing.
According to the outlet Brasil247, Vorcaro aimed to expand his leverage in Brasília, where he maintains close ties to Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI) and former president Michel Temer. He believed that a mix of political backing and media influence could help revive the blocked sale of Banco Master to BRB, a transaction halted by the Central Bank. Nogueira even proposed increasing the FGC insurance limit for CDBs from R$250,000 to R$1 million — a measure that Congress rejected. Vorcaro’s wealth was largely driven by offering high-yield CDBs paying up to 150% of CDI within FGC coverage rules.
Master group announced a sale to Fictor and investors from the United Arab Emirates on Monday. Hours later, before the deal advanced, the Central Bank ordered Master’s liquidation and detained Vorcaro.
Speaking to Brasil247, Geraldo Samor, from Brazil Journal, confirmed he is a partner of Flávio Carneiro, but not of Daniel Vorcaro, and said this ensures editorial independence in covering financial markets. He also rejected claims that Carneiro and Vorcaro are partners, despite widespread market perception that Carneiro acted informally on Vorcaro’s behalf.
