Salvador airport adopts sustainable aviation fuel

Bahia state and Vibra begin supplying cleaner fuel for Gol and Latam flights to cut emissions

Salvador airport sustainable aviation fuel

By Brazil Stock Guide – Bahia has launched Brazil’s first commercial aviation operation using sustainable aviation fuel as the Salvador International Airport begins supplying aircraft with the cleaner fuel this month. The initiative is led by the state government together with Vibra Energia SA (VBBR3), the country’s first company to import the product on a commercial scale.

According to information first reported by Broadcast, the fuel blend will supply two daily flights starting in November — one operated by Gol Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes SA (GOLL4) and another by Latam Airlines Group. The airport will distribute a mixture containing 10% pure sustainable fuel and 90% fossil-based jet fuel, allowing flights to take off with significantly lower CO₂ emissions.

Vibra said this is the highest concentration of pure sustainable aviation fuel ever used in Brazilian commercial aviation. The product, currently the only 100% SAF available in the country, is manufactured in Asia from used cooking oil — a residue that results in one of the lowest carbon-intensity feedstocks. The renewable fuel can lower greenhouse-gas emissions by about 80% compared to conventional jet kerosene.

Supply will be handled by BR Aviation, Vibra’s business unit responsible for fueling services at more than 90 airports nationwide. Vibra CEO Ernesto Pousada said, “Brazil’s largest energy transformation today is happening through renewable liquid fuels. Being the first company to commercialize sustainable aviation fuel in Brazil was no coincidence. It was a strategic decision and the courage to anticipate the future. This partnership with the State of Bahia makes us proud and reinforces Vibra’s commitment to decarbonization.”

Bahia Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues highlighted the state’s progress in green technologies, including renewable energy, automotive innovation and new industrial sectors. “Bahia has made great strides in producing clean energy and building a more sustainable future, with development and social justice moving together,” he said. He added that during COP30, “the state government reaffirmed its alignment with Brazil’s stance on the shared responsibility in confronting the climate crisis.”
