By Brazil Stock Guide – Raízen SA, one of Brazil’s largest fuel distributors, said Tuesday (14) it will not join the federal government’s diesel subsidy program, a measure designed to cushion the economic impact of rising global oil prices.
The decision highlights limited participation among major distributors in the initiative. So far, only Vibra Energia SA (VBBR3 BZ) has signed on, while Ultrapar Participações SA’s Ipiranga unit (UGPA3 BZ) has yet to announce its position.
The subsidy program is part of a broader package introduced by the government to mitigate volatility in domestic fuel prices driven by international oil markets. None of the country’s three largest distributors — Vibra, Raízen, and Ipiranga — had joined the program in March, raising uncertainty over its effectiveness.
Earlier Tuesday (14), Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira warned that distributors failing to comply with pricing rules under the subsidy framework could face fines of up to 1 million reais ($200,000), depending on regulatory findings.
