Petrobras rigs Bahia

By Brazil Stock Guide – Petrobras (PETR3, PETR4) will spend $2.5 billion decommissioning offshore platforms, with two units slated to be dismantled at the São Roque shipyard in Maragogipe, Bahia. The move is part of a broader package of investments in the state, including new offshore support vessels and the reopening of a fertilizer plant.

The plan was reported by Broadcast (Agência Estado) on Oct. 8, 2025. Petrobras Chief Executive Officer Magda Chambriard said the initiative will be officially unveiled on Oct. 9 at an event with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

“We face physical constraints to carry out platform decommissioning, and São Roque has the capacity to receive two large units,” Chambriard said. “We are decommissioning $2.5 billion in platforms, and two will go to São Roque. Adding São Roque optimizes Petrobras’s business with underutilized facilities.”

In parallel, the company will order six support vessels from the Enseada shipyard, also in Maragogipe, a move expected to generate 5,000 direct and indirect jobs. The Bahia investment package will also include the reopening of Petrobras’s fertilizer unit, Fafen, and fresh shipbuilding contracts, together worth 2.6 billion reais ($460 million).
