By Brazil Stock Guide – Brazil expanded its electricity generation capacity by 1.2 gigawatts (GW) in the first two months of 2026, reflecting continued growth in renewable energy projects across the country.
In February alone, Brazil added 743 megawatts (MW) of new capacity as several power plants entered commercial operation.
During January, 13 power plants started operations. The group included 11 solar photovoltaic plants, one thermal power plant and one small hydropower facility.
The expansion accelerated in February, when 16 additional plants began operating. Fourteen were solar photovoltaic units, alongside one wind farm and one small hydropower plant.
New projects were commissioned in seven Brazilian states across all five regions of the country during the period. Rio Grande do Norte recorded the largest increase in installed capacity, adding 640 MW. Minas Gerais followed with an additional 505 MW.
As of early March, Brazil’s monitored power generation capacity reached 217,921 MW. The figure is updated daily to reflect plants already operating as well as authorized projects currently under construction.
Renewable sources represent 84.73% of the country’s operating power plants, highlighting the dominant role of clean energy in Brazil’s electricity mix.
