**By Brazil Stock Guide —** Rumo (B3: RAIL3), Brazil’s largest freight railroad operator, has approved the purchase of 400 HTT hopper railcars from manufacturer Greenbrier Maxion, according to minutes of a board meeting held on October 27. The acquisition was unanimously approved by the company’s board of directors.

Rumo did not disclose the value of the transaction. The commercial terms are contained in a confidential appendix retained by the company. The filing also provides no delivery schedule or indication of which railway corridors will receive the new equipment.

Although the contract price remains undisclosed, historical benchmarks offer some indication of the potential scale of the investment. In February 2021, a Greenbrier Maxion HTT hopper railcar was recorded at R$490,600 in documentation filed with Brazil’s National Land Transportation Agency (ANTT), the federal regulator overseeing rail and road transportation.

For illustrative purposes, assuming a current unit price of between R$700,000 and R$1 million, the purchase of 400 railcars would imply an investment of approximately R$280 million to R$400 million (roughly $53 million to $75 million). This range is not a confirmed estimate of the transaction value, and the actual contract price could differ materially.

Another benchmark comes from a 2023 order placed by Brazilian logistics operator VLI, which acquired 168 HTT hopper railcars from Greenbrier Maxion and three locomotives manufactured by Wabtec for a combined investment of approximately R$200 million. Because the company did not provide a breakdown of the equipment costs, the transaction does not establish a directly comparable price per railcar.

Manufactured by Greenbrier Maxion in Hortolândia, in the state of São Paulo, HTT hopper railcars are primarily used to transport agricultural bulk commodities, including grains. The design features a lighter structure and rapid unloading capabilities, helping rail operators improve cargo-handling efficiency and maximize train capacity.

The latest order further strengthens Rumo’s commercial relationship with Greenbrier Maxion. In October 2024, the railroad operator’s board also approved a railcar purchase from the same manufacturer, with the commercial terms similarly kept confidential.
